Title: PHØNIX16 Brand Identity & Web Design
Client: PHØNIX16, Berlin

We were commissioned to design the identity of PHØNIX16 ensemble, a Berlin based multidisciplinary sonic collective researching the voice as a phenomenon in vocal arts, sonic interventions & environments, experimental films, sound exhibitions & sonic performances. PHØNIX16 is a paradox collective of individuals and a bearer of social, cultural & political expression.

The Brutalist aesthetics of the collective’s new identity and logotype, utilises basic geometric shapes and is inspired by the bare buildings of brutalist architecture of Spomeniks. The design language reflects the experimental, non-binary, and sonically unique “reverse remix” of digital with analogue acoustic aesthetics, communicating the values and essence of the sound statement of PHØNIX16 ensemble.

The Ø symbol of the mark —formed by an interplay between shadow and light— is an homage to concrete brutalist buildings. It has a sense of mass, creating a powerful and unusual image with a dramatic effect. It is constantly blurring 2D & 3D, creating a liminal state, to visually communicate the queer vocal expression and essence of the music collective. It can be read in many different ways, but that remains an illusion, and is left to the viewer to interpret.

The wordmark sits under the mark, with tight kerning to symbolise the unity of this paradoxical ensemble of individuals. The letters can be rearranged based on the state of the ensemble (number of performers, vocal proximity).

The B&W primary palette creates the brand’s brutalist feel. The primary colour palette is doric, minimal and high contrast white & black, symbolizing death & rebirth of the phoenix. The complementary fluorescent palettes add and edge and a playful dimension and work as a reminder of the analogue re-interpretation of digital sound.
